Hopefully, your pool was covered when you were not using it. This prevents the buildup of dirt at the bottom and leaves floating on the top. Nevertheless, there may be a few necessary repairs to keep the pool in good condition.
To begin with, remove the pool cover carefully so that water, dirt, and debris collected on the cover do not get into the pool. Check the water pH level and clean the pool before starting the pump.
The pump and motor may have not have been used while the pool was covered. There was no need to waste water and power. Evaporation was minor if the pool was covered. The pump needs to be cleaned and primed. This includes the skimmer and the filter within the pump. Use the pump's backwash to clean the filtration system.
The pump should run for eight to 12 hours when it is first turned on. If you find water on the floor of the pump room, you may need repairs to the intake or return lines. Your seal shaft and impeller may also need repairing. These are swimming pool repairs that should be done at the beginning of the season.
Pay close attention to the water level after removing the cover. If the water level is substantially lower than it was when you covered it, you have a leak. This may be a structural leak with a crack or tear you did not know about when you covered the pool.
You really won't know if you have structural leaks until after the pool has been cleaned and refilled to the recommended level. Add the chemicals needed to regain your pH balance. Watch the water level for a few days and perform the bucket test if you suspect a leak.
Check all of the fittings and tiles that might have become loose during the time it was covered. Water could easily seep into cracks in the grout and work in behind tiles. Look at light fixtures, railings, drain and skimmer attachments. They should all be secure.
