The pool and spa pump system may also have a heater. Pool pump leaking can burn out the motor and ruin the entire system. A leaking pump can also raise your power and water bill.
You need to check the pump system frequently looking for leaks on the floor of the pump area and listening for unusual sounds in the motor.
Water is pulled into the pump system through the intake valve and lines in the pool and spa tub. It comes in through the skimmer and main drains. The water should be free of debris if the skimmer is working efficiently.
The water moves through underground pipes to the pump system where it passes through another strainer basket and filter along with a heater. Water can also pass through a chlorinator. Salt water chlorinators are becoming popular. The water is then returned to the pool through another pipe. All components of the pump system must work to keep your pool clean. The pipes must stay free of cracks and debris to function efficiently.
1. The intake or suction side of the system can take in air. This is an air leak that usually slows the pump. It can be caused by a low water level due to a structural leak or too much debris in the skimmer. The pump may struggle when you turn it on, and you may see air bubbles around the skimmer.
The pool will need cleaning more often, and the water can be cloudy since it is not circulating freely through the system. A crack in the underground pipe can also allow dirt to seep into the system, clogging the filter.
2. The return line can have a leak that results in less water going back to the pool. You will see water on the floor of the pump room. The water returning to the pool does not flow evenly. There may be air bubbles in the return. (This is different from the bubble system in some spa tubs that pumps air separately into the water.)
3. The shaft seal that keeps the motor dry and turns the impeller is leaking. The motor must stay dry and separate from the water circulating system. The shaft must be repaired or replaced. The impeller can also be replaced.
Another indication of pool pump leaking is a louder or different noise coming from the motor. The pumping system is working harder than it should to compensate for a malfunction.
Pool pump leaking should be repaired by professionals familiar with your pool's motor and pump system. There are several types in use for pools and hot tubs. Aquaman Leak Detection will inspect your pump system, including intake and outflow lines. They will make the necessary repairs to the water circulation system.
