5 Things You May Not Know About Swimming Pool Leaks

Do suspect a leak in your swimming pool? Finding small leaks and immediately repairing them will prevent water waste and protect your investment in your pool and spa tub. Check out our list of 5 things you may not know about swimming pool leaks.

1. Evaporation Plays a Role

The average swimming pool holds 18,000 to 20,000 gallons of water. Evaporation accounts for about two inches of water loss a week. A daily loss of two inches can result in your pool losing more than 35 gallons of water a day based on the pool shape and size. This waste can add substantially to your monthly water bill.

2. Pool Leak Detection is now High-Tech

Swimming pool leak detection is now a highly technical job that uses modern equipment to find and fix leaks. All leaks should be fixed as soon as they are found to prolong the life of your pool and spa.

Underwater microphones called hydrophones are occasionally used in swimming pool leak detection to find cracks in fiberglass and plaster pool shells. Red dyes can also be used to identify and confirm leaks. The dye will be sucked into the leak if the pump system is turned off.

3. Your Pipes Are Leak Prone

The pool pump pulls water through the main drain and skimmer. The water goes through a filter, heater, chlorinator and returns to the pool through the return lines. A leak in any of the pipes will cause the pump to malfunction at some point.

A compressed air system is used to pressure test pipes. The air replaces the water causing bubbles at the leak site. The intake system can be pulling in air if there is a leak in that line.

It is important to inspect the intake line and the drains. This is one of the areas closely inspected by leak detection specialists using diving gear. Repairs, such as reattaching the drain, may be made during swimming pool leak detection.

4. Visible Signs May Be Present

Excessive water around your pool deck and landscaping can be an indication of an underground plumbing line leak. A technician searching for a leak will use hi-tech listening devices to find the problem.

5. Electronic Leak Detection Can Pinpoint Small Leaks

Vinyl pools often have tears that are difficult to find. A special vinyl leak detector uses electrical currents in the water to find small tears in vinyl pools. Vinyl patches can be applied immediately to stop the leak.

You can be the first person to find a leak after a bucket test indicates a usually low water level. Check your pool surface, pump and surrounding grounds carefully. Call in a professional "leak detective" such as Aquaman to further investigate the leakage problem.

Aquaman Leak Detection will use dive gear that does not harm your pool to carefully inspect drains and the underwater surface of pools for leaks. Repairs can be made to the surface during the inspection process. This is a thorough way to find even the smallest leaks in a pool shell.
