Spa tubs are a fun way to turn your backyard into a relaxing oasis. Whether attached to your swimming pool or free-standing, spa tubs are an easy addition to most spaces because they are smaller than a pool. Relaxing in a hot tub is a great way to unwind after a stressful day or enjoy a chilly evening under the stars. In order to keep your spa tub running efficiently, it’s important to perform routine maintenance.
There are various products available for spa tub maintenance to help keep the tub clean and functioning properly. Whenever you work on your spa tub, it is important to follow the directions for spa tub maintenance included with your model’s manual.
You can save energy by only running the heater during off-peak hours if it is convenient. Some spa tubs are indoors while others stay outside, often in a covered area. Keeping a freestanding tub covered when not in use will help maintain the temperature and keep utility bills lower.
Use a spray nozzle to wash the filter. You can also soak it in filter cleaner or water with white vinegar added. When washing is no longer enough to get the filter clean it’s time to replace it.
Take a sponge or a cleaning mitt and wipe away any stains from the waterline and tile areas. Wipe down the steps, railings and other fittings. Use a skimmer net to remove floating debris.
Check your manual to confirm draining timeline recommendations. Most suggest every three or four months based on use. The drainage should occur in dry weather, so as not to flood the ground. If a hose is used to drain the tub, direct the water to the ground away from your home. Since the water is chlorinated, it should not go directly onto grass or plantings. All electrical connections should be turned off and unplugged while draining.
The refilled spa will need a shock treatment of extra chlorine. It will also need alkaline additives to give the water the proper pH balance of 7.3-7.6, based on the recommendations of the manufacturer. A spa tub may need an extra shock after heavy use.
Microscopic particles of lotions or soap can come into contact with the air stream in the jets and cause tiny air bubbles that create foam. Frequent hot tub bathers should rinse suits and avoid washing them with soap products.
Inspect these areas if you suspect a leak:
Spa tubs will require part replacement occasionally, just like swimming pools. Sometimes a leak is easy to fix by tightening a light fixture or bolt. Other times a professional is needed to find and fix a leak. Good spa maintenance will let you enjoy your hot tub for many years.
