There is nothing fun about having a pool leak. Not one single thing. However, it doesn’t have to derail your fun or your budget. Often, it is quite easy to find and repair a swimming pool leak.

Quickest Way to Find a Pool Leak

The first thing you want to do if you suspect you have a pool leak is to make sure that you have a leak and it is not a result of evaporation. To determine if evaporation is the culprit you will need to perform a bucket test.  A bucket test takes 24 hours to complete, so make sure you have that window of time when there is no rain. A quick measurement after the 24 hour period will be able to tell you if in fact your water loss is due to evaporation or you do in fact have a leak. Check out this video for a tutorial on how to perform the bucket test.

If after performing the bucket test you confirmed you have a leak, here are your next steps:

  1. Check Your Plumbing - Plumbing is the number one source of pool leaks. Check your pump, pipes, etc. for moisture and leaks.
  2. Examine Your Fixtures - Check areas of railings, lights, tiles, etc. Make sure they are all secure and correctly in place.
  3. Look at the Liner - It is possible that you have a tear in the liner.

If you have checked all of the above areas and you have still not found the source of the leak, it’s time to contact a professional.

Quickest Way to Repair a Pool Leak

Repairing a swimming pool leak as soon as it is detected is very important. Leaks that are ignored become a bigger hassle to repair the longer it exists. The repair process is determined by the cause of the leak.

Let's look back to our first list to see what we need to do to repair your leak.

  1. Plumbing: If you have a clogged skimmer, that could be the cause of a pump leak, and an easy fix that you can do. Another easy fix is tightening a loose fitting. If you have a malfunctioning part contact a professional to repair or replace the pool part.
  2. Fixtures - Again, hopefully, this is something that can be fixed by the tightening of a screw, or replacing a light.
  3. Liners - if the tear in your liner is small, there are a couple of products you can use to repair the tear including a vinyl pool repair kit. Learn more about repairing a pool liner here.
